Salehe Bembury was a basketball fan when he was a child. He and his father like to watch the NBA. He said that when he was a kid in his shoes, he felt like a member of the Jordan basketball team. “These objects are all emotional things. Later, I realized what these designs mean.” said Salehe Bembury.

At the University, Salehe Bembury majored in industrial design in Syracuse, New York, USA. After graduating, his first job went to the discount shoe brand Payless. Founded in 1956, Payless sells sneakers as well as high heels and leather shoes. In other words, the first job of Salehe Bembury is not just about shoes.

“Payless is not very popular. But now, in retrospect, Payless designs a variety of shoes. From a learning perspective, this is a good starting point,” said Salehe Bembury.

After Payless, Salehe Bembury went to Cole Haan, acquired by NIKE in 1988. In 2011, he was appointed as a member of the creative team, where he participated in the design of The LunarGrand pedal flip-flops. As these shoes were designed with color elements added to the design of modern air cushions, they are considered to be "a turning point in men's shoes."

“Generally speaking, you will see your dad wear brown shoes when he goes to work. They look a bit rigid, a bit clunky and not very flexible.” said Salehe Bembury. “But young people are very different nowadays. When they went out into the workplace, they also brought a new dressing culture to the office. They all dressed very casually, which also made other people look more comfortable."

After working at Cole Haan for a year, Salehe Bembury jumped to the start-up company Greats. This company was established in 2013 to provide high-quality sports shoes, but it is only sold on e-commerce channels. At the beginning, only men's sneakers were sold, and women's sneakers production lines have now been added.

“When I was working at Cole Haan, the development cycle was 18 months. By Greats this time was shortened to 4 months. But in fact this is no big deal, because 18 months actually includes the time to do marketing and sales. Said Salehe Bembury.

In 2015, coconut shoes found him.

"The team of coconut shoes asked me to give a resume. We exchanged back and forth for several months before they finally decided to hire me to design men's shoes. I also asked me to move from New York to California," said Salehe Bembury.

Then, Salehe Bembury went to California where he saw Grandpa. After he thanked him for greetings, Grandpa said to him, "Let's change the world." But he now remembers that he was still reluctant to give birth to his native New Yorker before accepting the job.

Salehe Bembury's job was to design the third and fourth generations of coconut shoes, but he said his job was mainly to "help Grandpa implement his personal thoughts."

When the coconut shoes were brought to market, Salehe Bembury and his friend Kerby Jean-Raymond participated in the design of a pair of shoes for the men's wear brand Pyer Moss. As a result, he made a difference in the shoes - the soles looked like they were pasted with paint. "This is a metaphor for all kinds of things that drag us. It doesn't matter whether it is social or economic," said Salehe Bembury.
